Historically, Chinese paintings depicted an idealized beauty of the natural world through ethereal landscapes and humankind’s place in it. Poetry was often included as part of the artwork. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s that the contemporary art scene was born in China with the birth of the No Name Painting Collective and the Stars Art Group. Influenced by their exposure to western art, these youthful avant-garde artists challenged the status quo and initiated free artistic expression in the post-Mao era. That’s the starting point for this exhibit, and we are honored to feature some of these artists.

It is said that art is in the eye of the beholder. However, the artist creates with intent. Images, composition, shapes, and colors convey meaning or evoke an emotional response. The works presented in the show provoke a deeper exploration of the themes that address our shared humanity, especially between the Chinese and American people.
