The three flags use the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue as their base, and feature Ding Yi’s iconic “cross” motif. During his field research in Jin Shan Ling, the artist was drawn to the wind’s forceful gusts in the mountain valley. This brand-new installation work, created for Aranya Plein Air Art Project, presents the dynamic relations of forward and reverse confrontation between natural and artificial winds. As an avant-garde figure of contemporary Chinese abstract art, Ding Yi has worked with the “cross” sign since 1988, discarding the figurative expression of painting to construct his unique artistic system. After more than thirty years of exploration, within the limitations of the specificity of the sign, the artist has employed painting techniques and shifting creative angles to endow his cross paintings with endless possibilities for variation and expression. The flags are repeatedly destroyed and rehabilitated, becoming a metaphor for Ding Yi’s artistic journey, a sort of freedom and unbridled energy that remains within the rules.
